Alaska International Senior Games founder Jim Madonna holds the Fairbanks-North Star Borough Lifetime Achievement Award, given to him at the Senior Recognition Day event May 8 at the Carlson Center. According to a statement from the Senior Games, "Jim's dream to encourage seniors to stay fit, to engage in friendly competition and have avenues to qualify for the National Senior Games Championships drove him to establish the games in 2003. Jim's efforts both in time and personal financial contribution was amazing. Because of Jim Madonna, the Alaska International Senior Games has been a benefit to many seniors over the past 12 years and will continue to do so in many years to come." Born in 1938, Jim is still an avid runner, competes in Senior Games and participates in Running Club North events.

This year's Alaska International Senior Games will be held Aug. 8-17 in the Fairbanks area.

Events range from horseshoes, bocce and golf to tennis, racquetball, archery, cycling, track and field, swimming and trap shooting. Basketball fans will appreciate two new events this year: free throw competition and three-on-three random coed.
