Ride sharing program starting up in Fairbanks

Tired of forgetting to start your car before you head to work on a chilly morning? Looking for a stress-free way to make your daily commute more manageable? Look no further than ridesharing. The Fairbanks North Star Borough has partnered with Zimride by Enterprise to offer residents a social ridesharing network. The new network allows people to easily find carpools from others in the area that share similar commute origins and destinations.

In addition to simply sharing cars with two or three commuters, Enterprise Rideshare will be conducting formation meetings over the next few months in Fairbanks for people interested in joining four or more coworkers in their commute. Zimride will list the vanpools as they are formed, and interested residents will be able to request to join a vanpool or start a new one.

Fuel costs while driving alone are usually more expensive than the total monthly cost of riding in a vanpool and based on the average commute of 50 miles round trip per day, driving alone will cost nearly $800 per month and almost $10,000 per year, according to AAA and Rideshare. Environmentally, carpooling limits our carbon footprint. According to the Zimride website, Fairbanks has already logged 5,667 miles and has reduced CO2 output by 1,246 pounds,
