The Fresnel lens that once sat atop Thacher Lighthouse off Rockport, Mass., now sits in the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, Mass. In the early 1820s, the Fresnel lens was invented by French physicist Augustine-Jean Fresnel, and its beam could be seen from a greater distance than others of that time.
