This is the ferry Malaspina, first and much-revered large vessel constructed a half century ago for the Alaska ferry fleet. It is shown emerging from Gastineau Channel waters that separate mainland Juneau from Douglas Island. Earlier, the vessel had been docked at the Juneau waterfront for a much-appreciated open house in honor of its 50 years of service to the citizens of Alaska and visitors to the state.
