Longtime Homer resident Daisy Lee Bitters uses one of the free spotting scopes set up at a Spit birding station during last year's Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival. The annual event is one of several in Alaska and the Yukon celebrating the spectacular spring return of dozens of species of migratory birds, from common snipe to majestic swan.
