His cuisine reigns supreme
Anchorage Pioneer Home's Iron Skillet contests takes on a pumpkin flavor

Gordon Jaynes, left, accepts the "Iron Skillet" award from Anchorage Pioneers Home administrator Rich Saville at the home's cooking contest party Oct. 23. This is the 17th Iron Skillet contest at the state-owned assisted living facility. Residents, their family members, friends, volunteers and staff submit culinary creations to a panel of judges, who carefully rank the entries on taste, creativity and appearance.

Dishes are numbered for judging. The theme for this year's contest was pumpkin recipes, and from the 18 entries, Jaynes' Pumpkin cream-filled krumkake was the winner. Second place went to Conchita Bulaong for "Graveyard pumpkin pie" and third to Myla Gatpandan for Shrimp fritters. Jaynes will take home a coveted cast iron skillet, with a special inscription, to display on his wall. Jaynes is a resident family member and also plays in the Buttonbox Gang, who performed music after the contest as the entries were dished out for all to enjoy.
