This is a special year for the Alaska International Senior Games as the event's senior athlete, Bettie Upright, above left, turns 100 years old this summer. Bettie will be competing at the gala games, bowling and bocce events, as well as the Torchlight Parade on Aug. 7. On her right is fellow bocce competitor Jane Soeten at last year's games.

Registration is underway for the 13th Annual Alaska International Senior Games, held Aug. 7-16 in Fairbanks. The annual event offers more than 20 sports and recreational events for participation, from distance running and tennis to horseshoes and pickle ball. Minimum age to compete is 50, with the exception of coed ice hockey, where women can be as young as 45. Registration ends July 25.
