Alaska attorneys provide free legal services on 2024 MLK Day

Events in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Bethel give Alaskans access to free legal advice

On Monday, Jan. 15, the Alaska Bar Association, Alaska Court System and Alaska Legal Services Corporation will host their fifteenth annual MLK Day free legal services event in Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks and Bethel.

“The Alaska Bar Association has followed the national lead of making this a ‘day on, not a day off’ as a powerful way of building community and providing service,” stated Krista Scully, Pro Bono Director of the Alaska Bar Association. “The need in Alaska for affordable legal services is great. Fortunately, so is the giving nature of our legal community.”

Free legal services will be available to any low-income Alaskan in need of legal counsel for all civil issues like family law, landlord/tenant, public benefits, employment law, probate, or estate planning issues.

Monday, Jan. 15 MLK free legal services clinic times and locations:

Anchorage Mountain View Girls and Boys Club – 315 Price Street, noon to 4 p.m.

Fairbanks UAF Community and Technical College, 604 Barnette Street (6th Avenue doors), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bethel Evangelical Covenant Church, 2 to 5 p.m.

Juneau Dimond Courthouse, 123 4th Street, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In addition to the one-day event, this year, Alaskans have access to a virtual legal clinic at The virtual clinic is hosted by the Alaska Bar Association and is an ongoing free and confidential service that allows Alaskans of modest means to receive answers to civil (non-criminal) legal questions, at no cost, from licensed Alaska lawyers.

“You are not alone when it comes to the legal issues in your life,” said Krista Scully, Pro Bono Director of the Alaska Bar Association. “If you qualify as a low-income household, you can have your legal questions answered for free. Alaska lawyers are volunteering their time and legal expertise to help you.”
