July 6 Worldwide Islamic holiday Ashura, which begins at sundown on Saturday, July 5, and lasts through the evening of Sunday, July 6.

July 11 Homer The Pratt Museum in Homer has an exhibit that runs through Sept. 26 by artist Sharlene Cline. "Connected" is an immersive exploration of shared humanity. A live music performance with singer/songwriter Jenny Baker takes place on the second Friday of July from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The museum is at 3779 Bartlett St.

July 14 France Bastille Day Independence Day in France. The Petroleum Club in Anchorage has an event with typical French food. You need a ticket.

July 20 Nationwide Space Exploration Day. The anniversary of the first moon landing in 1969.

July 21 International Global Hug Your Kids Day

July 29-30 Anchorage Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and for many years a fixture on PBS's "Nova," science series, has two public appearances. One is July 29, and it is a more traditional science talk. On July 30, he'll discuss "An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies, Part I." Tickets are available through CenterTix.
