The Alaska Commission on Aging invites the public to an upcoming educational webinar designed to empower Alaskans with the knowledge they need to navigate qualifying for Medicaid long-term care. This free webinar, Long-Term Care Medicaid Eligibility with Alaskan Attorney Amrit Kaur Khalsa, will be held via Zoom on Monday, Aug. 18, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Alaska time.
The Commission is offering this webinar in response to the enthusiastic feedback received after our June Estate Planning Webinar with Chelsea Riekkola, held in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Participants shared that they wanted more opportunities to learn about the financial, legal, and practical steps needed to plan for aging with dignity and independence. We heard that call clearly and are honored to bring Amrit Kaur Khalsa to lead our next session.
Since 1986, Khalsa has focused her legal practice on probate, estate planning, guardianship, and elder law. She brings nearly four decades of experience helping Alaskans prepare for the challenges of aging, including disability and long-term care planning. She is the owner of the Law Office of Amrit Kaur Khalsa and has long been recognized as a trusted legal educator across the state. She has presented at seminars for the Alaska Bar Association, the National Business Institute, Sterling Education Seminars, and a wide range of care-related professional organizations. In addition to legal professionals, she frequently shares her knowledge with family caregivers and consumers through events hosted by the Stone Soup Group, LINKS, the Aging and Disability Resource Centers, and Independent Living Centers throughout the state.
During the Aug. 18 webinar, Khalsa will cover a range of essential topics related to Medicaid and long-term care, including the use of Miller Trusts, rules regarding transfer of assets, and more. Her insights are particularly valuable for seniors, individuals living with disabilities, and caregivers trying to understand how to balance personal resources with the high cost of care.
Planning for long-term care is one of the most important steps older Alaskans and their families can take to maintain stability and quality of life as they age. Nursing homes in Alaska can cost more than $10,000 per month, and even home-based care can quickly overwhelm retirement savings. Medicaid is the only public program that covers long-term care, but qualifying can be difficult without advance planning. Families may spend down all their assets unnecessarily or face denial of coverage at a time when care is urgently needed. By learning about the legal tools and options early, Alaskans can preserve financial resources, reduce stress for their loved ones, and ensure that care is available when needed most.
The Alaska Commission on Aging encourages seniors, caregivers, professionals, and anyone interested in future planning to attend this important webinar. It is open to all Alaskans and free to join.
