All aboard for the fair

Long-time Southeast Alaska State Fair volunteer Mitchell Shaman of Juneau drives the Southeast Alaska State Fair's unique train at last year's fair in Haines. It's a tractor with a custom fiberglass body and provides rides to fairgoers of all ages.

This year's Southeast Alaska State Fair in Haines is July 31 through Aug 3, with the theme "Unleash Your Inner Fair." In its 46th year, the fair reflects the cultures and people of Southeast Alaska. Sand wrestling is a new contest this year, but the logging show, fisherman's rodeo, wearable art, Tlingit carving and puppet theatre will be back.

Music and performances on three stages; animals and petting zoo; food for every taste; arts and crafts. Contests for loveable dog, horseshoe fans, volleyball, fiddle players and disc golf both challenge and entertain those who attend. http://www.seakfair.org. 766-2476.

Fairbanks

The Tanana Valley State Fair in Fairbanks takes place Aug. 1 through 9, with the theme, "Peonies From Heaven: Burgundy/Pink/White." The senior luncheon on Wed, Aug. 6, noon to 2 p.m. served by Fred Meyer, is free, but only for seniors. Competitive exhibits in over 30 categories. Demolition Derby is a new event and many favorites return. Senior gate admission, ages 60 and up, is $5 per day or $20 for a "season pass." On Aug. 7, youth and seniors with four cans of food to donate get in for $2. http://www.tananavalleyfair.org. 452-3750.
