Men compete last year in the Buck Sawing contest, one of several friendly competitions held during the opening ceremony gala games at the annual Alaska International Senior Games in Fairbanks.

This year's 12th Alaska International Senior Games will be held August 12-21 in Fairbanks, with the opening ceremony and gala games kicking off at 6 p.m. at the Fairbanks-North Star Borough Birch Hill Recreation Area. The event begins with a torch lighting ceremony, lead by the senior athlete Bettie Upright, 101 year young!

Since 2003, AISG has attracted participants from across the United States and several other countries to compete in everything from disc golf and road races to ice hockey and Pickleball, among a plethora of other activities that cater to different levels of experience and fitness. There will be 65 events in 20 different sports, in all.

This year the top four athletes from each division will qualify to participate in the National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama.

The 14 qualifying events include basketball, swimming, archery, horseshoes, table tennis and many more.

Registration ended July 25, but that doesn't mean latecomers can't join in on the fun: volunteers are needed with just about every aspect of the events, from keeping time to serving refreshments and running errands.
