The Alaska Native Brotherhood and the Alaska Native Sisterhood are nonprofit organizations founded in 1912 in Sitka to address racism against Alaska Natives. Elizabeth Peratrovich, a member and grand president of the ANS, organized, wrote petitions, and testified to the state Senate in 1945 about the mistreatment and lack of rights of Alaska Natives, helping to win the state’s 1945 Anti-discrimination Act. In 1988, the anniversary of passage was designated a state holiday as Elizabeth Peratrovich Day.
