Seward center to close in January for upgrades

Service for seniors will continue

Seward Senior Center will be closed for construction for three weeks, Jan. 17 through Feb. 7, 2020.

“For the modernization of senior services, we will improve our security, sign in systems for all visitors and knock out a few cobwebs that seem to grow as we stay super busy serving our greatest generation,” said Seward Seniors Executive Director Dana Paperman.

During the closure, transportation, the lunch program, meals on wheels and fitness programs will continue at other locations. Fitness classes will be hosted at the AVTEC gym and nutritional services will be hosted at the American Legion, Post 5, open 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Paperman said.

She said the remodel will provide the center with a private office space for Medicare, Social Security and crisis counseling. Front desk volunteers will be moved into the office, working with the public through a window (like a lunchroom gate), providing security for volunteers. With the addition of a gift case and office space for passport photos, the center can increase its revenue stream for programs in 2020, Paperman said. “Who doesn’t need more fundraising opportunities?”

Other modernization improvements will include installation of USB ports throughout social areas, and implementation of the MYSENIORCENTER electronic sign-in system, which will be unveiled when the center reopens Feb. 10.

Staff will provide phone support during the closure. Call for more details, 224-5604.
