Jan. 1 International New Year’s Day. A federal holiday in the United States. Banks and most government offices will be closed.

Jan. 1 Alaska Applications for the Permanent Fund Dividend open and stay open until March 31.

Jan. 1 National Dry January. Many people now use January to reset their lives, including making a pledge not to drink alcohol during the month.

Jan. 4 International World Braille Day. The day honors Louis Braille, who invented the tactile reading and writing system, which helped usher in greater independence, education, and human rights of blind and visually impaired individuals.

Jan. 9 National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Jan. 11 National Human Trafficking Awareness Day brings attention to a crime that leaves a lasting toll on human life, families, and communities around the world. 

Jan. 18 National U.S. Postal Service rates increase. Prices for Priority Mail service will go up approximately 6.6%, while Priority Mail Express prices will go up 5.1%, 7.8% for USPS Ground Advantage and 6% for Parcel Select.

Jan. 19 National Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This annual federal holiday falls on the third Monday in January each year in honor of King’s birth on Jan. 15, 1929. The campaign to make this a national holiday began shortly after his assassination in 1968 but was not approved as a national holiday until 1983. Banks and most government offices will be closed. Many people celebrate the day by involving themselves in volunteer service.

Jan. 27 International Holocaust Day of Commemoration. The United Nations and many countries commemorate the liberation of the death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and honor victims of the Holocaust, with events focusing on remembrance and education. The Jewish Yom HaShoah is also a Holocaust Remembrance Day. It will be observed from April 13-14.

Jan. 28 National Data Privacy Day is a time to review how our data is used. It's an excellent opportunity to evaluate and strengthen our personal cybersecurity.

Jan. 31 National Hot Chocolate Day. This event celebrates the thicker, richer cold-weather beverage.
