Aug. 18/19/20/26 Fairbanks & Anchorage First day of school The first day of school for children in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is Aug. 18. In Anchorage, for children in first to sixth grade, and ninth-graders the first day is Aug. 19. Classes begin for children in grades seven, eight and 10th to 12 grade on Aug. 20. Kindergarten students begin Aug. 26.
