The Statewide Summit on Aging is coming up in October. It’s an opportunity to connect policymakers, service providers, state agencies, advocates and the public.
The summit was inspired by the Aging and Disability Summit traditionally held at Special Olympics in Anchorage. The Alaska Commission on Aging partnered with Special Olympics and several other organizations to make this larger summit possible this year.
The summit is Thursday, Oct. 15-Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Turnagain Social Club in Anchorage, 630 E Tudor Road.

The first day (Thursday) begins with a pre-summit intensive about improving fragmented systems to support aging in place. The official summit opens at 1 p.m. with a keynote speech from Turnagain Social Club on the Adult Day Experience, followed by breakout sessions that cover environmental home modifications, elder support best practices, building tribal adult protective services, and other topics. The day ends with an off-site reception at the Nave from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The second day (Friday) includes sessions on healthy aging, long-term care financial planning, dementia risk reduction, traumatic brain injuries and dementia, fraud and scam prevention, and suicide prevention in older adults.
The last day (Saturday) has a focus on vision, policy and innovation. Topics will include closing Alaska’s residential care gaps, housing issues, including developing tribally run assisted living homes. The day also includes the State Plan For Senior Services Public Hearing, an educational gubernatorial forum on aging and disability issues, and a closing keynote on the future of aging.
The Summit is free for Alaskans ages 65+ and Alaskans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (registration required). The Alaska Commission on Aging also has scholarships available.

Parking is limited at Turnagain Social Club. The Alaska Commission on Aging encourages using carpools and rideshare services. A shuttle will also be provided to and from additional parking across the street.
