Dianne Barske

Alaskan author (and Senior Voice contributing writer) Dianne Barske will receive a first place national award at this year's National Federation of Press Women Communications Conference, to be held Sept. 10-12 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage.

"Saving Katie" is a children's book based on a true story about a stranded musk ox rescued by Alyeska Pipeline employees in 2011.

She is receiving the award for her non-fiction children's book, "Saving Katie, Pipeline Employees Rescue a Baby Musk Ox." She is both the writer and illustrator of the book, created as a contract with Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, whose employees rescued the baby musk ox, stranded along the Alaska Pipeline in 2011.

Katie is now at the Alaska Zoo, thriving along with other musk oxen there. Dianne's book is available in the zoo gift shop, and all proceeds from the book's purchase go to the care of Katie.

National Federation of Press Women is a dynamic nationwide organization of professional women and men pursuing careers across the communications spectrum. It holds a national conference annually, hosted this year by Alaska Professional Communicators. The awards banquet will be held on Saturday evening, Sept. 12.
