Aug. 14 Alaska Anchorage School District starts the academic year Aug. 14 for children in first-sixth grade and ninth graders. Pre-kindergarteners and kindergarteners begin Aug. 21. All other grades start Aug. 15. The first day of school is Aug. 19 in Fairbanks.
Aug. 16 Fairbanks The annual Stand Down for Veterans event features medical, dental, optometry screenings, identification cards, haircuts and a range of other services. It's from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carlson Center, 2010 Second Ave. Open to all with a veteran ID, DD214, or VA card. Breakfast and lunch served.

Aug. 25 Alaska Classes begin at the University of Alaska Anchorage, the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Alaska Southeast. In 2021, the Board of Regents amended admission requirements. The policy allows Alaskan seniors to qualify for a tuition waiver if they are 65 or older by the first day of instruction for the semester. Seniors using the Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver may register on a space available basis on or after the first day of instruction for the semester. The waiver covers tuition only; seniors remain responsible for campus and course fees.
