Oct. 1-31 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A campaign held throughout October to raise awareness and support for research, early detection, and education regarding breast cancer.

Oct. 1 National Black Dog Day. Did you know black dogs have a harder time getting adopted? Maybe today’s the day you look at your local shelter and adopt a black dog.

Oct. 4 National Taco Day. Dig in.

Oct. 6 National News Engagement Day. Founded by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), this day encourages people of all ages to read, watch, listen to, and discuss the news.

Oct. 12 National Indigenous Peoples Day. Alaska was one of the first states in the union to designate Oct. 12 as a day to recognize Alaska Natives and Indigenous peoples generally in 2015. Then-Gov. Bill Walker’s proclamation read: “Alaska is built upon the homelands and communities of the Indigenous Peoples of this region, without whom the building of the state would not be possible.” The day is recognized by other cities and states. It has not yet been made a national holiday by Congress.

Oct. 12 National Columbus Day. This is an official U.S. federal holiday honoring Italian heritage and explorer Christopher Columbus.

Oct. 16 National Boss’s Day. If you have a good boss, let them know. If you don’t, maybe it’s time to become your own boss or find a different job.

Oct. 31. International Halloween, derived from All Hallows’ Eve, the traditional eve of All Saints’ Day. It’s a holiday that’s not just for kids anymore. Anyone can don a costume, eat treats and attend community fall events.
